Top 20 AM Tool Features Part 4

In this week’s article, we complete our series of posts where we examine the top features to look for in a modern identity and access management system. We started with access management, but plan on doing later installments on identity management and directories. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send us your thoughts at info@secidsol.com and maybe you’ll change our minds on the order!

For maximum excitement and anticipation, we have gone with a top 20 list and done 5 entries per post. Having shared the other 15, here are the top 5:

  1. Scalability

Often taken for granted, the ease and efficiency associated with a products’ scalability should not be ignored. Fluctuations, or increases due to mergers and acquisitions, in IAM throughput requirements are to be expected and accommodated in enterprise architectures.

  1. High Availability (HA)

Another system requirement that is not unique to access management, HA is critical in most enterprise components. Make sure that your tool of choice will oblige your system’s Service Level Agreement (SLA) before making the purchase.

  1. Varied Resource Protection

As access management has evolved, a variety of ways of protecting resources have been introduced and adopted. Support for a variety of them (agent, agentless, proxy, REST, API, etc.), if not all, will be very important to the flexibility and usability of your enterprise AM solution.

  1. Multifactor

The introduction of additional factors in mainstream authentication has been an important step in increasing computing safety. Make sure that the product that you choose offers a straightforward way to include MFA in your flows, even if it is by integrating with an external product to do so.

  1. SSO

Both a convenience and security feature, SSO should top the list of items by a purchaser of an IdM system. Support for current and emerging SSO features and standards (e.g. SAML, WS-Fed, OIDC) will set products apart from other less useful tools.
